Article by Erica Stephens

As of lately, Black Churches around the UK have been offered more than monetary donations, they have also been offered voter registration forms. It is part of a new social justice initiative by The Dream Revolution to encourage more Ethnic Minority Church Communities to ‘move from the pews to the polls’ for the upcoming Police & Crime Commissioner Elections in November 2012. Heading up the campaign is 21-year-old Student, International Radio Host, and Business Owner Ryan J. Bruce, who has been sending out voter registration forms to Black Majority Churches across the country (excluding London).

The Dream Revolution reached out to the Electoral Commission in September 2012, who, after hearing about the drive, donated 1000 voter registration forms to the organisation. A representative from the E.C. said it was a ‘great idea’.

In a statement, Bruce (pictured left) who has been nominated for a 2012 Black Youth Achievement Award for his efforts, said: “When our parents or grandparents came over to the UK in the 1950s and 60s, the Black Church was known as a ‘community movement’. Now in 2012, we seem to have now become a ‘community monument’”.

“We started out being the voice of the black community, demonstrating a passion for community involvement and advancement, but some 50 plus years down the line, our focus now leans more towards personal attainment and achievement. Whilst I can happily celebrate the economic progression of the Black Church, I also believe that by being one of the leading community groups during the civil rights movements, we owe it to ourselves and to the coming generation to keep-a-float the dream of social equality that was birthed out of the blood, sweat, and tears of our forefathers and mothers. This campaign is here to do exactly that. Our job is not to tell anyone who to vote for, but rather to encourage our people to move from the sideline to the frontline and regain the community and political respect we gained during the 60s.

The first step in this direction is voter registration, the second being voter education (being informed of the issues that are heavily affecting the community and understanding the power & purpose of one vote), and the third being voter demonstration (voting based on the policies needed most for community progression)”.

Taking place during the same month as the next U.S. Presidential election, Ryan went on to say “whilst our sister-country across the pound (USA) is busy gearing for their next Presidential Election, our focus here in the UK ought to be making sure we get the right PCCs in office, particularly after the summer riots we saw take place last year”.

The Police & Crime Commissioner Elections will take place on November 15th 2012 in 41 Police Areas in England & Wales (excluding London).

The Police & Crime Commissioner elections give the public an opportunity to have a say in who actively stands up again crime and holds the police to account in their area. The Government considers the elected Commissioners to have a stronger mandate than the “unelected and invisible police authorities that they replace”.

Police and Crime Commissioner elections will be for 41 of the 43 police forces in England and Wales; only the City of London Police and Metropolitan Police will not be involved (the elected Mayor of London is classed as the Police and Crime Commissioner for the Metropolitan Police Area, while the Court of Common Council will serve the role for the City Police). The election will take place using the supplementary vote system.

All registered electors (British, Irish, Commonwealth and European Union citizens) living in England and Wales (except London) who will be aged 18 or over on Thursday 15 November 2012 are entitled to vote in the PCC elections. Those who are temporarily away from their ordinary address (for example, away working, on holiday, in student accommodation or in hospital) can still vote in the PCC elections. Those who are registered to vote at more than one address (such as a university student who has a term-time address and lives at home during holidays) are entitled to vote in the PCC elections at each address, as long as they are not in the same police force area.

The deadline to register to vote in the PCC elections is midnight on Wednesday 31 October 2012, though anyone who qualifies as an anonymous elector has until midnight on Thursday 8 November 2012 to register.

Pastor Jamal Bryant and the Empowerment Movement is calling on members of the clergy, and concerned citizens to come out to the “CODE RED” Conference. The voter registration initiative will be held in Baltimore, MD, August 16 – 18, at the Empowerment Temple AME Church, located at 4217-4221 Primose Ave, Baltimore, MD 21215.

“CODE RED” attendee’s will receive 2 1/2 days of intensive training, strategizing, and self empowerment. The event will begin with a Town Hall Meeting, Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. The topic of discussion will be “What is at stake in the 2012 election, and what is expected of the President?” The goal is to develop a platform that we will stand on through 2016 as a collective assembly of ecumenism. The evening will conclude with a traditional revival service.

On Friday with the assistance of the electoral commission everyone in attendance will be deputized as official Deputy Voter Registrar’s, which will give them the authority to replicate the registration process in their homes. Further all lay representatives will receive training in evangelism and witnessing. At this consortium we are rolling out a concept called ACTIVIST EVANGELISM, which is a practical process that empowers the congregation and the community to grow around Christ and a cause. The evening will conclude with the second night of revival with national preachers and singers.

Saturday morning will begin with 8:00 a.m. prayer; lifting up the U.S. President, the people and their plight. Immediately thereafter busses will be dispatched all over the city to win people to Christ and register citizens to vote. This will be the practical application portion that they hope will be duplicated around the country.

Martin Luther King III will visit Liverpool next month to take part in Slavery Remembrance Day.

Mr King is the eldest son of Mrs Coretta Scott King and Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr King was one of the most important figures of the 20th Century and one of the greatest non-violent leaders in world history. In particular Dr King is known for his advancement of civil rights in America and the youngest ever winner of the Nobel Peace Prize.

Dr King’s tireless work in the campaign to fight human injustice ended tragically due to his assassination aged 39 in Memphis in 1968.

Like his father, Mr King is a human rights campaigner and community activist. He is a lifetime member of the Board of Directors and former President and CEO of The King Center in Atlanta Georgia.

Mr King is currently involved in global humanitarian efforts and voter registration initiatives throughout the United States and abroad.

Mayor of Liverpool Joe Anderson will welcome Mr King to the city.

Slavery Remembrance Day has been commemorated in Liverpool every 23 August since 1999. It is organised by National Museums Liverpool in partnership with Liverpool City Council.

Three days of free activity are planned around Slavery Remembrance Day in which Mr King will play a key role on the Wednesday and Thursday:

A Family Day at International Slavery Museum on Saturday 18 August.

The Memorial lecture by Mr King at St George’s Hall 7pm Wednesday 22 August.

Building dedication of the Dock Traffic Office at Albert Dock on 12.30am Thursday 23 August. The building is to be renamed “The Dr Martin Luther King Jr Building”.

A Walk of Remembrance through Liverpool city centre and libation ceremony on Thursday 23 August.

Details about all the Slavery Remembrance Day events: www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/slavery

Details of how to get free tickets for Mr King’s lecture: www.stgeorgesliverpool.co.uk

Mr King’s involvement in the three day programme has come about following a chance meeting thousands of miles away.

Cheryl Magowan, Communities Senior Manager at National Museums Liverpool, was paying her respects at the gravesite of Dr Martin Luther King Jr and Mrs Coretta Scott-King at the King Center in Atlanta last year, when she met their eldest son, Mr Martin Luther King III.

Cheryl said: “It was a powerful moment I’ll never forget, I sat, said a prayer and thought deeply about what the great Dr King did for black people and all of humanity, I looked up and standing in front of me was Mr King and his wife.

“Then the King Center’s security guard Kevin, whom I’d made friends with earlier said: ‘Cheryl you’re blessed today, I’d like you to meet the boss man himself, Mr Martin Luther King III, Dr King’s son and his wife’.

“I then invited Mr and Mrs King to visit Liverpool, the International Slavery Museum and to take part in Slavery Remembrance Day, which they graciously accepted.”

Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said: “The slave trade is a hugely significant part in Liverpool’s history and we have made a pledge as a city that it will never be forgotten.

“Our Slavery Remembrance Day commemorations are an important date in our calendar, bringing the whole city together to remember those who suffered as a result of the slave trade and to celebrate the wonderful cultural diversity which exists in our city.

“This year’s celebrations are set to be momentous with the arrival of Martin Luther King III. Mr King and his father are an inspiration to us all. They are real symbols of how, by working together, we can achieve equality for people of all races, cultures and backgrounds.”

Next month sees the fifth birthday of the International Slavery Museum which opened in 2007. The Dock Traffic Office at the Albert Dock will be re-named The Dr Martin Luther King Jr Building in tribute to the civil rights leader who was one of the driving forces for tackling racism and inequality in Americain the 1960s. Dr King is an iconic and inspirational figure known worldwide for his non-violent methods and his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in 1963.

The longer term plan for the Dock Traffic Office, dependant on funding, is to expand the International Slavery Museum into this building.

Claire Benjamin, Head of Communities at National Museums Liverpool, said: “Slavery Remembrance Day grows in strength each year. We are thrilled to have Mr King attend this year and for him to be delivering the lecture as well as dedicate the Dock Traffic Office in memory of his father.”

The President of the Republic and Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills has joined his ancestors. An official statement signed by Chief of Staff, John Henry Martey-Newman said Prof. Mills took his last breath at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, in the afternoon of yesterday

“It is with a heavy heart and deep sorrow that we announce the sudden and untimely death of the President of the Republic of Ghana -His Excellency Professor John Evans Atta-Mills,” the official statement said.

“The death occurred at the 37 Military Hospital this afternoon, while recovering from medical attention, after being taken ill a few hours earlier. The Vice-President, John Dramani Mahama, will broadcast to the nation in due course,” the statement, signed by the Chief of Staff said.

The Vice-President was to be sworn in at Parliament House, at the time of going to press.

Nigerian leader, Goodwill Jonathan, was the first foreign Head of State to send his condolences. He praised the departed Ghanaian leader as a brother with whom he was working to move the fortunes of the sub-region forward.

He prayed for God’s guidance to the Government and people of Ghana on the sad event.

President Mills had not enjoyed a clean bill of health for some time now. As a matter of fact, there had been rumours on a number of occasions about his death, which proved to be false.

Barely two months ago, rumours were rife in the national capital that the Head of State had passed away. It turned out to be false. Apparently, the President’s health was not the very best.

On Saturday, June 16, 2012, the President flew by a commercial flight to New York, for what was described as ‘routine medical check-up.’

At the Kotoka International Airport, President Mills told newsmen thus: “What I have decided to do is to go for a medical check-up. So I’m going for a few days and then come back. I’m able to sit down with the doctors and talk about things. Of course, there are all kind of things which I believe I can strengthen myself for,” the Head of State said, before flying away.

When the President returned from his check-up, on Monday, June 25, 2012, he was met by an enthusiastic crowd of mainly National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters who hanged on every word of the returning Head of State.

Though the President did not look that well, he gave the assurance that his check-up had gone well and was in a position to move the ‘Better Ghana’ agenda forward.

“I have a message,” President Mills said, cheered on by the party faithful. “The report of the review tells me one thing, that the energy that I have is strong enough and, therefore, I will drive from here to the Castle to continue with my work.”

In spite of this assurance, the outing of the President became fleeting at best. His last official sighting was to inspect the Suhum stretch of the Accra-Kumasi Highway. His demeanour did not indicate that he was enjoying a clean bill of health.

When the Institute of Economic Affairs announced the traditional Presidential debates, the NDC stated that the President would not participate in them. According to Mr. Richard Quarshigah, Propaganda Secretary of the party, the head of State was staying away because it had become a tradition for sitting Presidents to stay away from the debates.

Political pundits were of the view that the statement gave an indication that the President might not have been well. Last Friday, Nii Lante Vanderpuiye, a special Aide to the President, virtually gave the game away when he told an Accra FM station that President Mills would not take part in active campaigning.

The Head of State, he said, would only wave at the crowd, while they did the foot work.

New Patriotic Party Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo suspended his campaign in the Western Region yesterday, as a mark of respect for the fallen leader.

The Ghana Football Association announced the postponement of the week-end’s FA Cup final between New Edubiase and Ashanti Gold as a mark of respect to the fallen President, who was an excellent sportsman and administrator.

Today’s lecture featuring Akenteng Appiah Menkah in the Freedom Lectures at the Coconut Grove Hotel in Accra, has also been put off.

Dubbed ‘Asomdweehene’ for his peaceful posture, President Mills left behind a wife, Naadu, and a son, Sam Mills. Official state funeral would be announced later.

New research published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation investigates the cost of living in Britain today. Since the first financial crash and ensuing recession, households require a third more income to maintain sufficient living standards.

The cuts to tax credits under the coalition government, plus escalating childcare, transport and private rental costs, compounded by stagnating wages, places one in four of the UK’s population below the income threshold for the minimum standard of living – an increase of 3 million people since 2008 to over 15 million.

JRF’s research provides an average (its barometer is pitched above bare survival but is by no means luxurious) of nation-wide necessary spends. OBV asks – what does this mean for BME communities?

Average statistics risk obscuring enormous variation across socio-economic, ethnic and geographical locations. We are already aware that of the one in four living below the necessary income standard, a disproportionate number are BME households. Research by the Institute of Race Relations from 2008 to 2011 finds that BME families have an income of less than 60% of the median household income. In practical terms, this means little or no extra money to boost extra-school learning, to buy necessary clothes and, worse still, to provide enough food for the whole family. Living standards are falling across the country, particularly for ethnic minorities.

This is not a crisis belonging to the work-shy or unemployed. BME men and women alike are paid less than those from other groups with similar qualifications or experience, working in comparable roles for the same number of hours. For example, in the capital, more than one in three Bangladeshi and Pakistani employees earn below the London Living Wage of £8.30 an hour. This leaves them nearly three times worse off than their white-British next door neighbours. One explanation for this gap is that non-white employees are more likely to participate in an informal work-place culture, which is neither unionised nor regulated. In turn, this limits access to professional development, progression, training or further qualifications.

To make matters worse, the rising cost of living is expected to require more and more households to rely on their savings. But statistics from the Department of Work and Pensions shows that almost two thirds of BME households have no savings at all, compared with a third of white households. Lower savings and assets are undoubtedly informed by lower wages, but also impact on the other determinants of poverty: education and un-paid caring.

These determinants of poverty make the link between social and economic disadvantage explicit. First, as highlighted by Will Hutton in a recent Observer piece, the middle class are spending 11 times more on “enrichment activities” for their children than those at the bottom, to successfully play the game of social mobility.

Second, a lack of financial muscle for educational leverage is exacerbated by experiences in the work-place. Low earners are more likely to endure anti-social working hours, preventing parents from spending time with their children. At the same time, responsibility to care, perhaps for an elderly relative (because private care is unaffordable to many), requires accepting working conditions with exactly those undesirable anti-social hours. Persistently, the cause and effect of poverty is transferred across the generations in reciprocal, interacting motions.

In the fight for equality, eradicating the social wealth gap is paramount, along with the recognition that this gap is invariably racialized. Unless pro-active measures are taken to unravel social and economic elitism, this country risks cornering off a destitute underclass with no outlet for the frustrations that poverty entails.

The approaching anniversary of the worst riots seen for a generation should remind us that positive action is imperative. As long as the lowest paid, low security jobs are filled predominantly by ethnic minorities and migrant workers; as long as income inequality remains unaddressed, limiting choice and opportunity; as long as the myriad requirements of different communities are not holistically targeted, the racial wealth gap will not only linger – it troublingly grows.

The 2010 UK Parliamentary election saw 50% of BMEs turn out to vote, and The Dream Revolution have a vision to enlarge this percentage over the next two years by registering a record-breaking number of new BME voters (by 2014). Voting in any type of election, from local elections to Prime Minister primaries, provides an important way to voice your opinions regarding elected leaders and overall policies; voting also helps you decide your own future by electing a person who might reflect your own views. The ability to vote exists as one of the most cherished Constitutional Rights that many fought for, marched for, and died for over the centuries. If the right to vote no longer existed, the country would no longer survive as a democratic nation, but completely totalitarian. By not voting, you give away your right to influence the government overall. More importantly, however, not voting takes away the “will of the majority that governs this country, but [replaces it with] the will of the minority”.

Remember, governments never aim to please, suit, or satisfy groups with low voter registration statistics!

In a statement the BOA said: “We are pleased to confirm that the International Olympic Committee have awarded an accreditation to the BOA, which will be allocated to The Voice.”

This will give The Voice the ability to cover track and field at the Olympic stadium.

Last week, The Voice, which is a subsidiary of The Gleaner was denied accreditation to the Olympic Stadium by the British Olympic Association.

On submitting their application for accreditation The Voice newspaper was told that; ‘The extraordinary interest and demand from UK media saw the British Olympic Association (BOA) receive more than 3,000 requests for the approximately 400 accreditations available.

‘After careful consideration by the Media Accreditation Committee, we regret to inform you that your application for accreditation for the London 2012 Olympic Games has been unsuccessful.’

‘Should we be in the fortunate position to receive additional accreditations from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the Games near or if any granted accreditations are returned, we will reallocate them to applicants on our waiting list. You will automatically be put on this list.’

However, The Voice readers have rallied around Britain’s longest-serving black newspaper after it was denied a media pass to the Olympic Stadium.

More than two thousand persons signed the online petition yesterday.

There is estimated to be more than 4,000 black-led places of worship across the UK boasting a collective membership in excess of 300,000.

More than half of all churchgoers in London are said to be from an African or African Caribbean background.

And even though the black community represents only two percent of the country’s population, it makes up at least seven percent of worshippers nationwide.

For further evidence of the collective power of the black church, Jesus House senior pastor Aru Irukwu was this year voted Britain’s most influential black person in a poll organised by the Mayor of London’s Office.

AUDIENCE

It is no wonder that politicians are keen to get an audience with those church leaders who speak directly to a large section of the black community.

With this in mind, The Voice invited key leaders of some of these churches including Bishop Wilton Powell MBE, the national overseer for the Church of God of Prophecy, and Bishop Wayne Malcolm, founder of Christian Life City Church, to its Editors’ Forum to thrash out some of the pressing issues of the moment.

The discussion was hosted by Premier Christian Radio at their Vauxhall headquarter on Wednesday, June 20, and co-chaired by enterprise guru Sonia Brown MBE and DJ Muyiwa Olarewaju who presents the channel’s Gospel Tonight programme.

Guests were asked to discuss if Christianity was still relevant in modern Britain, before focusing on the most divisive issue for religious leaders across the country: their position on proposals to legalise of same-sex marriage.

Shez Christopher, the women’s regional leader for Church of God of Prophecy, stressed the importance for black churches to not only be open-minded, but also to be vocal about it.
It was vital, she said, in order to challenge negative perceptions of the church in the mainstream media.

Throwing open the debate, she said: “There is a lack of voice on this issue. What if the church were to welcome homosexuality and same sex marriages? Where is the voice saying that we embrace them and would like gay people to come and fellowship with us?

“If we were to start making that clear that the church is inclusive, we could attract the attention of the media and we could be considered a voice in society.”

“This issue is something that has been placed upon us”, argued Bishop Powell. “The church is in reactionary mode.”

He added: “The message of the gospel speaks to all human conditions. There are people in your congregation who have murdered, sold drugs and all manner of things. We don’t exclude them. Are we pretending that there aren’t homosexuals in our congregation already? Of course there are. We must be inclusive.”

CAUTION

Bishop Malcolm was more cautious.

He said: “I don’t think our issue is being able to say ‘all are welcome’. The issue is when [gay members] come, what are we now going to insist and demand from them in order to be accepted and fully integrate as a member [in accordance with the gospel that says homosexuality is a sin]? This is where we are split.”

There was a general consensus that one of the biggest challenges facing the church was a need to communicate more with those outside of their congregation in order to be seen as a positive influence in society.

Voice columnist Marica Dixon, and editor of Keep The Faith magazine, said: “In my opinion, the black church is one of the best things happening in our community.

“Some of the most progressive and successful people come out of our churches. There are a lot of good things happening and we need to shout about it more.”

The discussion then turned to how churches are communicating, not just with their congregation, but with the world at large, particularly the mainstream media that has had a tendency to seize upon isolated cases of corruption, child abuse and witchcraft.

It often overlooks initiatives like Street Pastor founded by Les Isaac, who was recently awarded an OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours or housing associations that have been set up by some churches.

Co-chair Brown asked: “How do we modernise the church so it keeps up? Are we engaging with social media?

“There’s an entire generation only on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, so are we using those tools effectively in response to the challenges we face?”

In response, Dixon said: “A lot of what is being preached in the pulpit is different to what was being said 20 years ago.

“It is now very much about empowering you for life. Black church leaders are talking about education, entrepreneurship and taking control of your own destiny. Maybe these elements aren’t being communicated on other platforms.”

She added that American pastors like TD Jakes, Joyce Meyer and Joel Ofsteen were among the most retweeted users on Twitter.

COMMUNICATION

Noel McLean, of Yahweh Christian Fellowship, said that part of the problem was not lack of communication, but too many different voices.

He said: “We haven’t always been willing to have one people to speak for us. Like in Acts 3, Peter spoke, but said ‘hear us’. There’s a need for humility, and let the person who is called speak on our behalf.

“We have to recognise our limitations. One church tried to take on a domestic violence issue and failed miserably. This is where I am concerned. Some churches don’t have the resources or the expertise. We can be a positive influence. For example, a survey found that most people going through depression turn to their faith leader, before they went to their practitioner. So, we can work in partnership as a referral service, and not attempt to replace those services.”
